Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII is cancelled

Some time ago we reported that there was a rumor that Final Fantasy Versus 13 was being re-branded Final Fantasy 15.  Those rumors turned out to be false but apparently Kotaku has received word from several sources that development on Final Fantasy Versus 13 has stopped altogether. Sources say that “Versus XIII was officially cancelled within the last few weeks.” and that Square Enix has “decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation” due to worries that the announcement would negativity impact Square-Enix’s stock price.

When asked if the game was still in development Square simply stated that they “have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update” us “as soon as it becomes available”. Which is probably one of the most non-committal statement I have ever heard. There are some rumors that the development team for Versus XIII was folded into another title which would explain the previous rumors of its re-branding but unless we hear official word from Square-Enix on this there is simply no way to tell.

Hopefully these rumors turn out to be false since Versus XIII actually looked somewhat interesting to me but I certainly wont be getting my hopes up.
