Online Pass Removed from Hitman Absolution

Square Enix has announced that they wont be requiring an online pass for North American copies of the upcoming Hitman Absolution. The game had previously been planned to lock the game’s Contracts Mode behind the online pass but instead the mode will automatically be included in the game. The game will still have the online pass in other territories; however, Square has stated that the online pass will be available for free rather than charging a fee for the unlock key.

It’s good to see some developers shy away from the Online Pass. I hate the damn things, so much so that I actually go out of my way to avoid purchasing games that use them.

Nintendo Network Accounts Are Locked to One Console

Some disappointing news on the Nintendo front was revealed yesterday after the release of the Wii U when some users realized that they cannot use their Nintendo Network accounts on multiple Wii U’s. Apparently the accounts are bound to the console that they were created on and cannot be used or transferred to other Wii U consoles. This could lead to some trouble for people who purchase games online via Nintendo’s eShop if they ever lose or have their console stolen.

Hopefully Nintendo doesn’t stick to this and opens the Nintendo Network account up to other consoles because otherwise it just seems like they are going one step forward and two steps back with their online ecosystem. Especially when you consider that you can spend upwards of 60 bucks on a single game on their eShop and potentially lose that game if your lose access to the Wii U you purchased it on.

GTA Vice City Pulled From Digital Download Services

Grand Theft Auto Vice City has recently been pulled from online digital retailers like Steam. The game was removed due to a licensing issue with a Micheal Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin” which is available in one of the in-game radio stations of the game. People who have already purchased the game on Steam will still be able to access it but new copies of the game cannot be purchased.

Hopefully this isn’t a trend for games in the future now that they tend to get songs from artists rather than composing their own stuff. I would hate for some of the best games of last generation to be buried and forgotten thanks to the music industry.

Black Ops 2 PC Accidentally Shiped with Copies of Mass Effect 2, Bioware responds by offering Free Games

A small group of people purchasing the PC version of Black Ops 2 ran into an interesting problem yesterday as they found that the second disc was in fact a Copy of Mass Effect 2 rather than a Black Ops 2 disc despite being labeled as such. Luckily those who bought the PC version of the game could just download the game data via steam regardless of what was on the disc.

Now a day after this strange mishap, Bioware has responded by offering free PC copies of the Mass Effect Trilogy of the first 50 people submit proof that they were affected by the manufacturing error. Read the rest of this entry »

Microsoft has no plans for DirectX 11.1 on Windows 7

Microsoft has recently released version 11.1 of its Direct 3D API for Windows 8 and Windows RT but it seems people hanging on to their old installs of Windows 7 will miss out on this particular update to DirectX. This was confirmed by Microsoft Employee Daniel Moth who stated on Microsoft’s msdn forums that there is “no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7.”

So there you have it, you can now factually state that Microsoft has pulled a Vista with Windows 8. At least in the sense that they are holding back support for DirectX on their older OS platforms just like the originally did with DirectX 10 on Vista.

Humble Android Bundle 4 Now Available

The newest Humble Bundle has launched today and it is once again focusing on the Android platform. The Bundle includes Splice, Eufloria, Waking Mars, Crayon Physics Deluxe, Superborthers: Sword & Swocery EP and Machinarium for people who pay more than the average. As an added bonus the soundtracks for each of these games are also included in this bundle.

If you haven’t already purchased most of these games I would suggest picking this bundle up. Especially if you have an Android Device lying around. Hell I already own half of em but the bonus of being able to get the Soundtrack and an Android version of Swords and Swocery is enough for me to chip in. Read the rest of this entry »

Skyrim: Dragonborn DLC coming this December

The newest DLC pack for Skyrim was announced recently  by Bethesda via the above trailer. The DLC pack focuses on the first Dovahkin and features new monsters, and dragon mounts. The Dragonborn DLC pack will coming to Xbox Live this December 4th for 1600 Microsoft points or $20. The PC version of the DLC will be coming at a later date, and I suppose a PS3 version might happen one day. That is, if they can ever get the first DLC pack to work on the PS3.

I really feel for those of you with the PS3 version of this game. Not only are you stuck with a somewhat broken experience but you also cant swap out your dragons for Macho Man Randy Savage. Read the rest of this entry »

New Turian Character Images from Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC

BioWare has released some new screenshots of one of the planned new characters for the upcoming Omega DLC for Mass Effect 3. The new characters name is unknown but we do know that the character is female. The  Omega DLC is set to be released this November 27th for $15 and will feature General Petrovsky from Cerberus as its main antagonist.

This news kinda surprised me, since I had just assumed that Turian’s only had one gender like the Asari. I suppose that’s what I get for putting the franchise on my backlog. Read the rest of this entry »

Battlefield 1942 Available For Free on Origin

EA has started a promotion with Battlefield 1942  which has the game being made available digitally for free from now until March 1, 2013. The only catch is that the free download of the game is only available via their origin service. So if you have any qualms about using the service at all then you are out of luck.

That being said the game is still a classic in my books and free is free. Just a shame its attached to a service I don’t like very much.

EA Games on Sale for 60% off on GOG this Weekend

GOG has started a 60% promotion for a large selection of EA games on their service this weekend. The sale includes some great classic PC games like the Wing Commander Series, The Ultima Series, Sim City 2000 and the Populous Series. In fact the only EA games in the GOG catalog that are not on sale are Bioforge and the Medal of Honor Allies Assault War Chest bundle.

I find myself somewhat conflicted by this sale, mostly because I promised myself I wouldn’t support EA after they decided to constantly cram online passes and Origin down our throats  but then again I really do miss playing Sim City 2000 and Nox.
